Carbon Fibre Bonnets: What to Know Before You Buy

A carbon fibre bonnet is the single biggest visual change you can make to the front of a car, and it's the one part where construction really matters. Single-sided or double-sided, woven or forged, standard carbon or dry pre-preg — each choice changes the price, the weight and the finish you'll be looking at every time you walk up to the car. Here's what to check before you order.

What a carbon bonnet actually changes

The look

A bonnet is the largest flat surface on the front of the car and sits at eye level in every photo. That's why it reads so differently to a splitter or a set of mirror caps: a carbon bonnet changes the character of the whole front end rather than adding a detail to it. Against a light paint — Brooklyn Grey, Nardo, white — the contrast is deliberate and hard to miss. On a black car it's subtler, and the weave only shows when the light catches it.

Most bonnets in the range are also restyled rather than straight replacements. Power domes, vent outlets and a more pronounced centre line give you a shape the factory never offered, which is much of the appeal.

The weight

Carbon panels are lighter than the steel or aluminium bonnet they replace, and the saving comes off the highest, furthest-forward point of the car — the most useful place to lose it. Be realistic about scale, though: this is a styling upgrade with a weight benefit, not a performance modification on its own. A double-sided carbon bonnet with a full inner skin will also weigh more than a single-sided one, so the lightest option isn't always the one that looks most finished underneath.

The constructions you'll see, and what they mean

Single-sided vs double-sided

Single-sided means the carbon is on the outer skin, with a fibreglass or composite inner structure. Double-sided means both the outer and the inner skin are carbon — so when you pop the bonnet, the underside is finished in weave too. Double-sided costs more and weighs more, but it's the option that stands up to a show-stand crowd looking underneath.

Woven, forged and honeycomb

The three finishes you'll meet most often on bonnets:

  • Woven (3K twill) — the classic chequerboard weave, available in gloss or matte. The safe, timeless choice.
  • Forged — chopped-fibre marbling rather than a repeating pattern, so no two panels are identical. Bold, and increasingly the enthusiast pick.
  • Honeycomb — a hexagonal-pattern weave. Rarer, and a strong match for cars already running honeycomb grilles.

Standard carbon vs dry (pre-preg) carbon

Dry carbon is pre-impregnated cloth cured under pressure in an autoclave, which produces a lighter, stiffer panel with less resin and a flatter, more even surface. It costs more and it's what most of the premium bonnets in the range use. The CMST dry carbon bonnet for the M3 G80 / M4 G82 and the Aero Carbon Max Style bonnet for the 4 Series G22 / G23 are both built this way. Standard carbon fibre panels are still genuine carbon and look excellent — they simply use a wet lay-up process rather than an autoclave.

Transparent and glass-topped bonnets

A growing category: a carbon bonnet with a tempered glass window over the engine bay, so the bay becomes part of the styling. The CMST transparent glass bonnet for the Tesla Model Y is a good example of how dramatic this looks on a car with a clean front compartment. Worth thinking through before you commit: everything under that glass is now on display, and the glass adds weight a plain carbon panel doesn't carry.

Vented, trim and conversion options

Not every route to a carbon front end is a full panel swap.

Vented bonnets add functional or styled outlets — a motorsport look, and on a hard-driven car a route for hot air out of the bay. The Sooqoo dry carbon vented bonnet for the M3 G80 and M4 G82 is the clearest example of the style.

Bonnet trim pieces are the low-commitment entry point. Something like the Achen Cybe carbon bonnet trim for the M2 G87 adds carbon detail to the front of the car without replacing the panel — far less money, far less installation work, and reversible.

Conversion kits pair a bonnet with a new front bumper as one purchase, so the restyled nose is designed as a single piece of work rather than two parts that have to agree with each other. There's a front bumper and bonnet conversion kit for the 4 Series G22 that shows the idea well. One order, one price, one delivery to plan around.

What to check before you order

Your exact chassis code

This is where most ordering mistakes happen. Pre-LCI and LCI cars often take different panels; so do coupe, convertible, saloon and Touring variants; and facelift models like the Model Y Juniper or the A3 8Y take entirely different parts to the cars they replaced. If there's any doubt, message us with your registration or exact model year before you order and we'll confirm fitment.

Catches, struts and pins

A restyled bonnet doesn't always reuse the factory latch and strut arrangement, and some designs are intended to run bonnet pins. Check the listing and ask if it isn't stated — it's a conversation to have before the part ships, not while the car is in bits.

Lead times

Bonnets are made to order, and they're large. Production runs to roughly 10 working days at the factory, but the panel is too big to travel by air, so it ships by sea: expect around 30–45 days end to end. If you're building toward a show date, order the bonnet first and let the smaller parts catch up.

Installation

We recommend professional installation for any carbon panel, and a bonnet more than most. Panel gaps, shut lines and latch alignment are all set on fitting, and a good installer will get them right first time rather than leaving you with a lip that catches the light wrong. UK customers can ask us to point them toward our network of trusted installation garages. The rest of the ordering detail — shipping, duty, finance — lives on our FAQs page.

FAQ

Is a carbon fibre bonnet lighter than the original? Yes — carbon panels are lighter than the steel or aluminium bonnet they replace, and that weight comes off the front and top of the car. Treat it as a styling upgrade with a useful side effect rather than a performance part in its own right. A double-sided bonnet with a full carbon inner skin weighs more than a single-sided one.

What's the difference between single-sided and double-sided? Single-sided has carbon on the visible outer skin with a composite inner structure. Double-sided is carbon on both skins, so the underside is finished in weave when you open it. Double-sided costs more and is the choice for show builds.

What is dry carbon, and is it worth paying for? Dry carbon uses pre-impregnated cloth cured under pressure in an autoclave, giving a lighter, stiffer panel with a flatter surface finish. It's the premium option and most of the higher-end bonnets in our range use it. Whether it's worth the difference depends on how close people are going to be looking.

How long will a carbon bonnet take to arrive? Bonnets are made to order. Production is typically around 10 working days, and because the panel is oversized it travels by sea rather than air — so plan for roughly 30–45 days overall. Smaller parts are far quicker.

Do I need a garage to fit one? We strongly recommend it. Bonnet alignment, shut lines and latch setup all get decided during installation, and with any aftermarket panel minor adjustment can be needed to get the gaps even.
